Following the recommendations of the consultants’ report, work has been going on this week to attempt to ease the waterlogging problems on 9 of the worst affected plots at the Marsh Lane allotment site.

The top layer of soil was stripped off and removed together with the weeds and whatever vegetables had managed to survive.
The excavator then repeatedly ripped the ground by dragging a 60cm blade through the soil to break up compacted layers. Only time will tell if this brings a lasting improvement – there is increasing suspicion that the imported soil was not adequately checked & tested for suitability, and that water can’t drain through the underlying membrane.
